How To Clean Counter Tops

QUICK STEP CHECKLIST:

  • Clean off Counter tops with a damp cloth and Mild Soap and Water or try our gentle, organic Counter top Cleaner! $14.99
  • Use a gentle scrubber to address any areas that need extra attention.
  • Wipe dry with a microfiber cloth or paper towel.
  • For Deeper stains, make a paste of baking soda and water and allow to sit on the counter top for at least 24 hours then wipe clean.

A Deeper look per Material Type:

Granite:

Wipe the surface with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. For disinfecting use a mild solution free of harsh chemicals. Do not use an abrasive cleanser or scrub pads as they can scratch the surface. Make sure you apply a granite sealer at least once a year to help prevent stains and make it easier to clean!

Quartz:

Wipe down with mild soap and water and dry thoroughly. Ask us about our organic counter top cleaners!

Laminates:

Use Warm soapy water or a very very mild bleach solution. (Straight bleach can discolor the surface- best to test your solution on an area that isn’t in a visible area) Do not use abrasives or scratchy pads to clean or you will have scratches in the tops. Use a soft toothbrush along seams and edging. For Greasy buildup, use vinegar and water. If the surface feels tacky, rub with a paste of baking soda and water.

Butcher Block:

Use a clean sponge or soft cloth with a solution of water and mild dish washing liquid. Dry the wood with a second cloth. Kill bacteria with 1 tablespoon of bleach in 1 gal of warm water before cleaning with the dish soap. Dry thoroughly. If fighting a stain, rub half a lemon on the area for lighter tops. (you may need to let the lemon sit overnight). For darker wood tops dab the stain with a cotton swab dipped in 3% hydrogen peroxide to lighten it. If the stain seems permanent, as a final gesture, you can always sand and refinish the butcher block.

Use mineral oil to keep the wood from drying out. Let the oil soak into the surface, wiping up any oil that does not soak in. Do not apply too much as it can become tacky and attract dirt. Do not use linseed or vegetable oil because they can become rancid.

Limestone, Slate and Soapstone:

Wipe with warm, soapy water. Do not use acidic cleaners like lemon or vinegar. For stains, mix a paste of baking soda with water and wipe dry. The tops also require a sealer formulated for your particular stone type.
